Dr. David Kern
Naturopathic Physician
Licensed Acupuncturist
Dr. David Kern is a naturopathic physician with over 30 years of clinical experience
in natural health, preventative medicine, sports medicine and healthy aging.
Dr. Kern is also a licensed acupuncturist.
Dr. Kern began his four year naturopathic medical training in 1973 at the National College
of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. In 1977 Dr. Kern became
one of the earliest health practitioners in the United States to use bioidentical
hormone therapy in a clinical setting. In the years that followed, Dr. Kern evolved
an approach to total hormone balance and healthy aging through the use of
bioidentical hormone therapy, individualized nutritional biochemistry, stress
management and wellness living.
As a Family Physician and as an educator, Dr. Kern offers
extensive experience and a commitment to both educate and support people
to be their own best health provider. As a lecturer for other health professionals and
the public, he is known for a clear and comprehensive style.
In 2001, Dr. Kern was invited to join the medical staff of Maui Memorial Medical
Center, becoming the first naturopathic physician in Hawaii to be admitted to a
state medical center staff.
In 2005, Dr. Kern became the first doctor of alternative medicine to be chosen to
receive the Keola Award by the Maui Memorial Medical Foundation, for his service
in healthcare to the Maui community. At the awards dinner and ceremony,
Dr. Kern received a commendation from Linda Lingle, Governor of the State of Hawaii.
It reads in part:
“On behalf of the people of Hawaii, I send greetings of aloha and offer my
congratulations…as a leader in the field of women’s health and naturopathic
medicine, you set an example for others. I am proud of your accomplishments and
appreciate the 28 years you have devoted to serving the people of Maui, generously
sharing your time for the better of the community…”
In 2006, Dr. Kern was appointed by the governor to the Board of Examiners in Naturopathic
Medicine.
In 2008, Charlene Tavares, Mayor of the County of Maui, appointed Dr. Kern to the
Mayor’s Council on Health.
Dr. Kern has been president of the Hawaii Society of Naturopathic Physicians, the
professional state association, from 2009 to the present.
Dr. Kern is owner and clinic director of Grace Health Centers, with offices in Upcountry
Makawao and in Kihei, on the Island of Maui. The Centers offer a holistic and preventative
medical approach to a comprehensive range of health and medical conditions, as well as,
the treatment of pain and sport’s injuries, healthy aging and hormone balance through the
experienced use of bioidentical hormones.
Dr. Kern has been a resident of Hawaii since 1985.
